Henry VI. Two most curious Historical Documents of the reign of Henry VI.; the first, a remonstrance in the form of a Letter, addressed to the King, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, by the Duke of York, and the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury in 1455. / The identical Letter referred to in Parliament as having been intentionally kept back from the King, and thereby causing the Battle of St. Albans. "But all the blame was put upon the Duke of Summerset, Thomas Thorp, baron of the escheker, and William Joseph esquier, the king's collaterall companion: because that they, upon malicious purpose, kept a certeine letter from the kings knowledge, and would in no wise suffer it to be delivered unto him," &c. Holinshed. The second, a very full Letter, from John Stodeley, to Lord__, dated from London, 19th January (1454) containing most curious particulars of the state of parties at the time. <%%> <>17 <%%> "As touchyng tythinges, please it you to wite that at the Princes comyng to Wyndesore, the Due of Buck. toke hym in his armes and presented hym to the kyng in godely wise besechyng the kyng to blisse hym; and the kyng yave no man answere. Natheles the duk abode stille with the Prince by the kyng. And when he coude no maner answere have, the queene come in and toke the prince in hir armes and presented hym in like forme as the duke hade done desiring that he shuld blisse it; but all their labor was in veyn; for they departede thens without any answere or countenance, savyng onely that ones he lokede on the Prince and caste doun his eyen ayen without any more." "The duke of Somerset hath espies goyng in every lordes hous of this lande; som gone as freres, som as shipmen taken on the see, and som in other wise, which reporte unto hym all that thei kan see or here touchyng the seid Duke. And therefore make gode watche and beware of such espies." Compare the first of these Extracts with the reports which were spread abroad on the birth of the Prince, Edward, as stated by Hall and Holinshed.

CHARTULARIUM JOHANNIS DE NORWIGO, commencing A. D. 1288, ON VELLUM, in very fine preservation, large folio. [asterism] The subjoined note is a part of what Mr. Ord has written in the beginning of this curious and most important Manuscript. "The following MS. is a Chartulary relating to the Estates of the Lord John de Vallibus or Vaux. It was not unusual for our ancient Nobility to enter their Charters and other Evidences belonging to their Estates in Chartularies or Register Books, but unfortunately very few of the more ancient of these Chartularies are now extant. Mr. Astle had an old transcript of a Chartulary, made by order of Edmund Earl of Lancaster, anno 1289. This Chartulary above mentioned, and the present book are the OLDEST EVIDENCE BOOKS RELATING TO THE ESTATES OF OUR ANCIENT NOBILITY THAT HAVE AS YET BEEN DISCOVERED. The greatest part of this Chartulary was compiled before the year 1288, under the direction of the Lord John de Vallibus or Vaux." In the Volume is inserted loosely a Deed in the time of Henry II. making a Grant to Willelmo de Norwigo. Among the Witness recited are Robert (Querceto) Bishop of Lincoln. T. CANCELARIUS (Thomas à Becket). Henry de Essex, Standard-Bearer, &c. As Henry succeeded to the Throne in 1164, and Querceto, Bishop of Lincoln, died in 1166. These Letters patent must have been made within these two years.
