CONDITIONS OF SALE. / I. THE highest Bidder to be the Buyer; and if any Dispute arise between two or more Bidders, the Lot so disputed, shall be immediately put up again and re-sold. / II. No Person to advance less than 1s.; above Five Pounds, 2s. 6d.; and so in Proportion. / III. The Purchasers to give in their Names and Places of Abode, and to pay down 5s. in the Pound, if required, in Part Payment of the Purchase-money; in Default of which the Lot or Lots so purchased to be immediately put up again and re-sold. / IV. The Lots to be taken away, at the Buyer's Expence, within Three Days after the Conclusion of the Sale; and the remainder of the Purchase-money to be absolutely paid on or before Delivery. / V. The Books are presumed to be perfect unless otherwise expressed; but if, upon collating, AT THE PLACE OF SALE, they should prove defective, the Purchasers will be at Liberty to take or reject them. / VI. The Sale of any Book, or Books, is not to be set aside on account of any Stained, or Short Leaves. / VII. Upon Failure of complying with the above Conditions the Money deposited in Part of Payment shall be forfeited; and all Lots uncleared within the Time aforesaid, shall be re-sold by public or private Sale, and the Deficiency (if any) attending such Re-sale, shall be made good by the Defaulter at this Sale. / No Lots will be delivered during the Time of Sale. / Gentlemen who cannot attend the Sale, may have their Commissions faithfully executed, by their humble Servant, / R. Two most curious Historical Documents of the reign of Henry VI.; the first, a remonstrance in the form of a Letter, addressed to the King, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, by the Duke of York, and the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury in 1455. / The identical Letter referred to in Parliament as having been intentionally kept back from the King, and thereby causing the Battle of St. Albans. "But all the blame was put upon the Duke of Summerset, Thomas Thorp, baron of the escheker, and William Joseph esquier, the king's collaterall companion: because that they, upon malicious purpose, kept a certeine letter from the kings knowledge, and would in no wise suffer it to be delivered unto him," &c. Holinshed. The second, a very full Letter, from John Stodeley, to Lord__, dated from London, 19th January (1454) containing most curious particulars of the state of parties at the time. <%%> <>17 <%%> "As touchyng tythinges, please it you to wite that at the Princes comyng to Wyndesore, the Due of Buck. toke hym in his armes and presented hym to the kyng in godely wise besechyng the kyng to blisse hym; and the kyng yave no man answere. Natheles the duk abode stille with the Prince by the kyng. And when he coude no maner answere have, the queene come in and toke the prince in hir armes and presented hym in like forme as the duke hade done desiring that he shuld blisse it; but all their labor was in veyn; for they departede thens without any answere or countenance, savyng onely that ones he lokede on the Prince and caste doun his eyen ayen without any more." 559 CHARTULARIUM JOHANNIS DE NORWIGO, commencing A. D. 1288, ON VELLUM, in very fine preservation, large folio. [asterism] The subjoined note is a part of what Mr. Ord has written in the beginning of this curious and most important Manuscript. "The following MS. is a Chartulary relating to the Estates of the Lord John de Vallibus or Vaux. It was not unusual for our ancient Nobility to enter their Charters and other Evidences belonging to their Estates in Chartularies or Register Books, but unfortunately very few of the more ancient of these Chartularies are now extant. Mr. Astle had an old transcript of a Chartulary, made by order of Edmund Earl of Lancaster, anno 1289. This Chartulary above mentioned, and the present book are the OLDEST EVIDENCE BOOKS RELATING TO THE ESTATES OF OUR ANCIENT NOBILITY THAT HAVE AS YET BEEN DISCOVERED. The greatest part of this Chartulary was compiled before the year 1288, under the direction of the Lord John de Vallibus or Vaux." In the Volume is inserted loosely a Deed in the time of Henry II. making a Grant to Willelmo de Norwigo. Among the Witness recited are Robert (Querceto) Bishop of Lincoln. T. CANCELARIUS (Thomas à Becket). Henry de Essex, Standard-Bearer, &c. As Henry succeeded to the Throne in 1164, and Querceto, Bishop of Lincoln, died in 1166.
