To the READER. / This Sale of the Incomparable Library of the Reverend and Learned Dr. Meggot, late Dean of Winchester, I may reasonably expect will occasion the Attendance, and command the Presence of the Learned of the Age : For it’s hardly probable that they will be suddenly entertained again with a compleat Set of the Latin Fathers, a Collection of the Greek of the best Editions; as also of the most valuable and considerable Casuists and Schoolmen, Ecclesiastical Historians, Councils in short, of all the most useful and Celebrated Books in Divinity. The Philologici Classici, Histortci, exceed the Characters, and transcend those Commendations usually given of Books on these Occasions; for they may truly be said, with respect to their Number, Editions, beautiful Copies, and curious Binding, not to be valued, because very rarely, if at all, to be purchased when most passionately desired. Such a scarce and judicious Collection, necessarily infers what great Expence he was at in procuring; what Knowledg was necessary in the chusing of them : So that I may without being guilty of Flattery, rationally conclude, that excellent Person above-mentioned, to be really Master of all the different sorts of Learning contained in those admirable Folio’s, &c. being so many Reliques to be scattered and dispersed amongst the studious and inquisitive Gentlemen the Buyers, by way of Auction, so universally approved of, as having a peculiar tendency to advance the Interest of Learning in the World. / Your Servant, E. Millington. / This Sale will begin on Monday the 6th of Novemb 1693, at Roll’s Auction-House in Petty-Canon Hall in St. Paul’s Church-yard, from Four to Eight each Evening, continuing daily till all the Books are fold. / [seperating line] Conditions of Sale. / I. That he who bids most is the Buyer; and if any Difference arise which the Company cannot decide, then the Book or Books shall forthwith be exposed to Sale again. / II. That all the Books in this Catalogue, not otherwise expressed (for ought we know) are perfect, but if any of them appear to be otherwise before they be taken away, the Buyer shall have his choice of taking or leaving them. / III. That all Gentlemen will be pleased to give in their Names and Places of Abode, after their buying any Book or Books ; paying also 5 s. in the Pound in part of the Book or Books they shall buy (if demanded) and so proportionably for all lesser Sums, otherwise the Book or Books fold shall be exposed to Sale again. / IV. That no Person is to bid less than.6 d. a time under a Pound, and 1 s. above a Pound for Folio’s 4 d. for Quarto’s; 2 d. for 80, 120, 240. the first Bidding left to the Pleasure of the Company. / V. That the Money for the Book or Books bought, is to be paid within one Week after the Auction, is ended, at the place of Sale, where the Books shall be ready to be delivered to them, or their Order.
