283 Auli Gellii Noctes Attice, in red morcco. A Manuscript of the Fifteenth Century ornamented with all the richness of Illumination in miniatures and capitals, which distinguish the fine Italian Manuscripts of the Classics under the protection of the Medici Family. The writing, both of the Greek and Latin, is in the boldest and finest style of the Fifteenth Century, from which Sweynheim and Pannartz formed their types. The arms of the family for whom it was executed are in the first page. This beautiful Manuscript was in Mr. Edward's Collection. 37.16.6

287 A Collection of English Mysteries or Theatrical Pageants. A volume, very fairly written upon vellum, in the reign of Henry VI. or Edward IV.; and, as it is supposed, formerly belonging to the Abbey of Widkirk, near Wakefield, in the county of York. It contains several mysteries, or theatrical pageants, constructed from incidents in the Old and New Testaments, differing entirely in language from the celebrated Chester and Conventry Plays, though agreeing, with some few exceptions, in the subjects. There is very good reason for conjecturing that all the plays of this kind were composed by some ecclesiastical persons for the purpose of being acted in the monasteries, as well as by the tradesmen's companies in various populous towns and cities. The work commences with a soliloquy by the Deity, and proceeds with the following pageants: The Sacrifice of Abel; The Deluge, with a ludicrous and quarrelsome dialogue between Noah and his Wife; The Sacrifice of Isaac; Jacob; Moses; Pharoah; Caesar Augustus; Annunciation; Salutation; Adoration of the Shepherds; Wise Men's Offering; Flight into Egypt; Herod's slaughter of the Innocents; Purification; John the Baptist; Betraying of Christ; Mocking of Christ; Flagellation; Crucifixion; Delivery of Souls from Purgatory: Resurrection; The Pilgrims; Saint Thomas of India; The Ascension; The Last Judgment, (in which are many quaint and humourous dialogues of devils;) Lazarus, and concludes with the Death of Judas, which has been left unfinished. The preceding account was most obligingly communicated to me by Mr. Douce, when the Manuscript belonged to Mr. Towneley. It was purchased by Mr. Goldsmid at his Sale, and it may confidently be pronounced that no Theatrical Article of equal Curiosity or Value has ever been submitted to Public Competition. 157.10.0

FIFTH DAY'S SALE. Each Day's Sale will commence punctually at Half past Twelve. Folio.

723 Bochii Descriptio Publicae Gratulationis, Spectaculorum et Ludorum in adventu Serenissimi Principis Ernesti Archiducis Austriae, Ducis Burgundiae, anno 1594, Antverpiae editorum. The name of the Artist is unknown; but the drawings consist chiefly of figures, touched with a firm pen, and finished in water colours. The decorations represent the subjects exhibited on the triumphal entry mentioned in the title. These are games, sports, processions, fire-works, &c. &c.; and the figures occasionally introduced are no doubt portraits of distinguished contemporaries. Among the rest may be noticed the beautiful whole length figures forming the eleventh picture - which are unquestionably portraits. The description of the subjects is written in Latin (with illuminated initial letters) and the whole concludes with a poem in Latin hexameter verse. 6.8.6
