Preface and paratexts

TO THE READER YOu have here exposed to Sale by way of Auction, the so much fam'd Library of the late Reverend and Learn'd Prelate Dr. Bryan Walton Bp. of Chester, wherein are very many, not only excellent, but scarce Books, in most Languages: As also a large Collection of Manuscripts, most of which are in the Eastern Languages: Which may be seen at the King's Head in St. Paul's Church-Yard, at any time before the Sale; which will begin on Monday the 30th. of April, punctually at nine of the Clock in the Morning, and at two in the Afternoon, and so continue till the Books are sold. / The Conditions are these. I. He that bids most is the Buyer, and if any manifest difference arise, which the Company cannot Decide, then the said Book or Books, shall be exposed to Sale a second time. / II. That all the Books in the Catalogue not otherwise expressed, are (for ought we know) perfect, but if any of them appear to be otherwise before they be taken away, the Buyer shall have his Choice of taking or leaving them. / III. That the Money for the Book or Books bought, is to be paid by the Buyer within one Month after the Auction is ended, at Mr. Carr's House at the King's Head in St. Paul's Church-Yard, being the place where they will be Sold.|Bibliotheca Waltoniana.[after N@]|FINIS.[after N@92]|FINIS.[after N@19.]

Notes

'the books [represent] a substantial scholarly library (from which some books had clearly been abstracted before the auction), with little that was rare, let alone 'rarissimus' save a group of mostly linguistic manuscripts' (McKitterick, 2018)
"When compounding for his estate in Oxford in 1646, he claimed that his library, and other goods to the value of £1000, had been sold. The library he subsequently formed was sold by auction by Samuel Carr in London, 22 years after his death, on 30 April 1683" (Pearson)
